Much is left to the imagination of the reader / listener to decide what the monster is and it seems that it is only through popular culture over the past two centuries that we have the classic Frankenstein image. The narrative then changes to the account of Doctor Victor Frankenstein who recounts how he made his creation and then the monster himself tells his own story which takes us from Switzerland to England and then Scotland. Something strange is going on, that must is certain. Listening to this for the first time through twenty first century ears the aspect of this book that struck me most was the structure in which we first hear increasingly frenetic and strange letters from the captain of an Arctic ship to his sister.
It is astonishing to think that Mary Shelley wrote the first version of this proto-gothic masterpiece as early as 1818, almost three decades before Dracula's Bram Stoker was born. The Modern Prometheus still has the power to shockįrankenstein is one of those stories that is no ingrained into popular culture that it is easy to forget where is originated. It is a period piece in many ways, but some thoughts in this story are timeless.
Overall I really loved the book and narration. The end of the book surprised me and confirmed that I really didn't know the story at all. His feelings are not really different from those of people today. What impressed me was, how the author described all the feelings and inner struggles of Victor Frankenstein. It was like take a walk around my region, but two hundred years ago - amazing experience. Therefore all the landscapes were alive in front of my eyes and I knew exactly what places Victor was talking about. Usually, I'm not into long descriptions of the landscape, but here I didn't mind at all, because the story takes place in Geneva and I live nearby. I had the story confused with some modern interpretations, which obviously have a little to do with the original. I'm really happy that I listened to this book, because I found out, I actually don't know the story of 'Frankenstein' at all. The 19th century language was really a lot on my brain. I listened to 'Frankenstein' as an audiobook and I must say straight away, that if I were to read it, I probably wouldnt finish.
